Saratoga Eats: last food truck event of the year

Saratoga Eats, a twice-yearly food truck event in the Saratoga Intero parking lot, hits the town for its last event of the year on Aug. 25. Ten percent of each food truck’s proceeds, plus the event’s beer and wine sales, will be donated to the Intero Foundation, an organization that helps children in need.

The event includes 14 food trucks, music from radio station KFOX 98.5, beer and wine for the adults, face painting and balloon twisting for the kids. Seating will be provided, and lawn chairs are welcome to this family event.

Intero Realtor Kim Connor started the event in the summer of 2013, when she felt compelled to give to the Intero Foundation in a larger way than donating on every transaction she closed.

Connor’s statement on the event’s website reads, “As I learned more about the Intero Foundation and the great work they were doing in the community by issuing grants to charities focusing on children all over the Bay Area, I thought, ‘Hmmmm, how can I do more?’”

She began thinking about creating a presence in the neighborhood around the Saratoga Intero office. Inspired by other food truck events, she asked Sam’s Chowder Mobile to come serve lunch at the office one day in April 2012. She matched their daily sales for the event with a personal check to the Intero Foundation. The chowder truck has since served lunch every year in April and October.

“After the success of the Sam’s Chowder Mobile events, I thought about growing this concept in a much larger way,” Connor said on the website. “Moveable Feasts seemed to get crowds of people wherever they set up. I thought, what about hosting an event on a Friday night and inviting an eight-truck line up, and invite the community to come in and mingle.”

Saratoga Eats started with eight food trucks and 800 attendees. This month’s event will have 14 trucks and an expected 1,200 attendees.

“The beauty of this event is the fact that people come from all over the neighborhood, and they love hanging out, listening to music and enjoying good food with family,” Connor said. “When there are still people talking and hanging around after the music ends and the trucks are packing up, you know you’ve done a good job.”

At the last event in June, Connor said they raised more than $5,600 for the Intero Foundation. The August event typically has a higher turnout. Connor calls the event “bookending summer.”

The Intero Foundation supports local charities that impact the growth and well-being of children through enhancing their education, personal development and living conditions.

Brooklyn Pizzeria, Holy Cannoli, Los Tolucas, Sarah’s Latin Taste, Curry Up Now, Cutesy Cupcakes, It’s All Gravy, Grilled Cheese Bandits, Mogo BBQ, Scoops Ice Cream, Paddy Wagon Sliders, Shark Bait, Siam Loco Wraps and We Sushi will be serving food at the event.

Located at 12900 Saratoga Ave. at Cox Avenue, Saratoga Eats event runs 5-9 p.m. There will be plenty of free parking.

“When you have a diverse community like we have,” Connor said, “they bring their kids, their pets and their lawn chairs to hang out and have a fun evening. I think it’s a beautiful thing to watch.”
